Lighting that gives depth and texture
Every material has its own intrinsic
radiance and, depending on the finish,
the same material can create
wide-ranging effects. These effects
can in turn alter drastically under the
influence of different lighting
characteristics. The optical density
also affects the "material information
content". Optically soft materials, e.g.
wood, also have a more diffuse
reflectance. The material information
content is high, the information
contentent from the surroundings is
low. The reverse is true of optically
hard materials, e.g. in the case of
metals and shiny surfaces. Therefore
it is particulary important here to note
which materials can be used in the
direct vicinty as the material effect of
glossy substances is affected by the
surroundings.
