Press Releases

The new Terminal 1 at Hamburg Airport got off to a successful start with an impressive architectural design.

Hamburg Airport is currently the fifth-largest airport in Germany. In the future, more than 60 airlines will fly to 117 domestic and international destinations.

Around 4,000 specially developed lights make up one of the most advanced illumination systems in Europe in the new Terminal 1 of Hamburg Airport.

The architects office gmp with architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partner, Hamburg, continued the artistic lines of the existing terminal.

The internationally operating, multiple award winning engineers with the lighting planner Peter Andreas (picture) of Hamburg were responsible for the innovative lighting planning of the public area of the new Hamburg terminal. Their philosophy is as simple as it is applicable: “We make sure that people feel good through the light."

And consequently, only specially developed lighting solutions were provided for the great variety of visual conditions in the different usable areas of the new terminal.

Following the requirements of Peter Andres’ lighting planning office, WILA developed suitable outside downlights for various HIT assemblies, which provide no access to insects. Around 400 such downlights were used in the outside areas of the Hamburg terminal. The lights are protected against dust and streams of water (IP 65).

Bicolour. New downlights from WILA with high-pressure gas discharge lamps create neutral white or warm white cue states for the day and night visual needs of the people.

The new bicolour downlights from WILA for two different light colour high-pressure gas discharge lamps with ceramic discharge tubes provide both utilisation benefits in one lamp.

New light projector technology from WILA with increased efficiency for the indirect lighting of the new Terminal 1 of Hamburg Airport.
Newly constructed light projectors were positioned by WILA in the entire terminal, which continue this spatial experience as night begins to fall.
